CNY Debate: Do You Care If Your Angpow Money is Brand New?

by anna

As Chinese New Year approaches, a forum user in Singapore raised the question of whether people care if the money inside their angpow (red envelope) is brand new. The question sparked a range of responses from the public.

Some, particularly those with traditional views, prefer brand new notes in their red envelopes. A Feng Shui store also advises that clean, fresh notes are ideal, and certain color envelopes, such as red, gold, or orange, are preferred. In Chinese culture, odd numbers and amounts with the number four are considered unlucky.

However, many people shared a more pragmatic view, with some saying they don’t mind receiving money regardless of its condition. One commenter joked, “I’m too poor to worry about it; just give me any angpow!” Others referred to a previous report by CNA about the oversupply of notes, with some criticizing the waste created when new notes are discarded after the festivities.

Several also supported the idea of using repurposed notes, highlighting the inefficiency and waste involved in the current practice. “It’s silly to queue for hours for new notes, which just get spent or banked anyway,” one user noted.
