Gold and silver coins commemorating Sir Paul McCartney are now available for auction, offering collectors a rare opportunity to own unique pieces celebrating the legendary artist’s musical legacy.
The Royal Mint has announced that one gold coin and four silver coins, all part of its Music Legends series, will be auctioned through Stack’s Bowers Galleries. The gold coin, weighing 5 kilograms, is the largest gold proof coin ever produced as part of this series. Additionally, the four silver coins, each weighing 5 kilograms, are the largest silver proof coins in the Music Legends collection.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, expressed her enthusiasm, stating: “This is an exciting opportunity for collectors and fans of Paul McCartney to own a unique item celebrating one of the most influential music artists and songwriters of all time. Each coin available at auction showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of our artisans at the Royal Mint.”
She also highlighted the painstaking effort that went into producing these coins: “Taking hundreds of hours to create, these masterworks, crafted from gold and silver, feature milestones from Paul’s career and his journey to becoming one of Britain’s most successful artists.”
Adding a personal touch, Morgan noted that the 5-kilogram gold coin has been hand-signed by Sir Paul McCartney during his Got Back tour in late 2024, symbolizing his personal approval of the coin.
Accompanying the coins will be a certificate of authenticity signed by Sir Paul himself. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to charity, as confirmed by both Sir Paul and the Royal Mint.
The auction is set to run online until March 19, with bidding starting at just one US dollar. This collaboration between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and the Royal Mint follows successful joint ventures in recent years, including the sale of special royal succession coins in August 2023 and an auction of first strike coinage in October 2024.
Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, commented on the significance of the event, saying: “Paul McCartney’s timeless music and multi-generational appeal continue to inspire and unite fans worldwide, making this a memorable event for all to enjoy.”
