Koonenberry has confirmed the presence of gold mineralisation along a 4-kilometre strike of the Prince of Wales-Sybil trend, following promising results from rock chip sampling at its Sybil, Nicholls, and Back Creek prospects. Samples returned assays of up to 3.37g/t gold, further supporting the potential for high-grade gold deposits in the region.
The Prince of Wales structure, which has historical significance, features numerous old workings and test pits from two shafts that were mined during the early 1900s to depths of 170 metres below the surface. Despite these past activities, the area has seen only limited shallow drill testing in recent years.
Promising Preliminary Results
Koonenberry’s Managing Director, Dan Power, highlighted the strong potential for high-grade gold mineralisation across significant strike lengths at the Prince of Wales. “Our preliminary work has reinforced the opportunity for substantial gold mineralisation along this trend. Despite historical gold production of 26,000 ounces at an average grade of 8.7g/t, the project has seen minimal modern exploration,” Power said.
Power further emphasized the importance of expanding the project’s understanding. “We are eager to advance our knowledge of this project and will plan additional exploration activities to identify further targets before proceeding with drilling.”
Limited Exploration to Date
The company noted that the targets along the two mineralised trends—Prince of Wales and Sybil—have not yet been tested by drilling. Historical exploration on the project has been minimal, with only 13 rotary air blast (RAB) holes drilled across the site. One of these holes returned a promising result, intercepting 2 metres at 5.98g/t gold from a depth of 32 metres to the end of the hole.
Despite the historical underground mining efforts, the Prince of Wales project remains largely unexplored using modern techniques, including surface geochemistry.
Planned Geochemical and Exploration Work
Koonenberry plans to advance its exploration strategy at the POW-Sybil-Nicholls trend with a series of geochemical investigations. These will include soil and rock chip sampling, as well as geological mapping. The company also intends to carry out detailed structural interpretations using drone magnetic surveys and electrical geophysics to refine its drill targeting.
In addition, Koonenberry will undertake extensional sampling at the Back Creek trend and submit retained pXRF soil material for gold and multielement analysis.
With its modern exploration techniques, Koonenberry is poised to further assess the gold potential across the Prince of Wales-Sybil trend, a region rich in historical mining activity yet still largely unexplored with contemporary methods.
