Stack’s Bowers Galleries is set to partner once again with The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom for an exclusive auction featuring a bespoke set of Presentation Edition gold and silver coins honoring music legend Paul McCartney. The auction, scheduled for March 19, 2025, will showcase these rare and visually striking coins, which have been struck in 5-kilogram formats. With only one gold coin and four silver coins available, these pieces will be offered exclusively through the auction house.
Paul McCartney, a member of The Beatles and one of the most influential figures in music history, is being commemorated with these exceptional coins. Known for his melodic bass playing, versatile vocals, and prolific songwriting, McCartney’s contributions to pop culture and music have spanned generations. In collaboration with McCartney’s production company, MPL Communications, and under the guidance of The Royal Mint’s CEO Anne Jessopp and King’s Assay Master Daniel Thomas, these coins represent some of the rarest and most significant modern pieces to emerge from the Royal Mint.
Reflecting on the honor, McCartney shared, “This feels like a huge honor. It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.”
The gold 5-kilogram coin is the largest gold Proof coin in the Royal Mint’s Music Legends series and took over 250 hours to craft, including three days of polishing. This coin, hand-signed by McCartney during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris, also includes a personalized video message from the artist for the winning bidder. The silver coins, also 5 kilograms, are the largest silver Proof coins in the Music Legends series and mark the first time McCartney has been featured on a British coin. Only four of these silver coins are available in the Presentation format, with one being a personal gift to McCartney.
Each coin comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Paul McCartney, making them a rare addition to any collection of British numismatics or music memorabilia. A portion of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to charity, allowing buyers to acquire a historic item while contributing to a worthy cause.
This collaboration between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and The Royal Mint follows a series of successful joint efforts, including the sale of Royal Succession coins that brought in $5.1 million in August 2023 and an auction of First Strike coinage that earned $1.8 million in October 2024.
